Surf lessons at Praia da Macumba

If one wave in Rio was built for learning, it is Macumba. It sits between Recreio and Prainha, and the sandbank against the headland forms a long, slow, full right-hander — the kind of wave that forgives bad positioning and gives you time to stand up.

That is why Macumba became the headquarters of Rio longboarding, and why several schools take first-timers there instead of Arpoador despite the longer drive.

The beach is far less touristy than Zona Sul: fewer people in the water, a calmer rhythm and a strong local scene.

Why it works so well for beginners

The wave breaks slowly and runs for a long time. On a Macumba right you have several seconds to get to your feet; on the open beach break at Copacabana you have less than one.

The bottom is sand and the shallow zone is wide, which lowers the risk of a fall.

Because it is a bank wave against the headland, the take-off line is predictable, so an instructor can position you precisely.

Conditions

Best on a small-to-medium south or south-east swell with a mid tide. On a very high tide the wave swells up and loses its wall.

On a big swell Macumba holds and stays surfable, but the right gets faster and the peak fills with people.

Wind: like most of Rio, the morning is the window.

Getting there

By car, roughly 50-60 minutes from Arpoador via Avenida das Américas and then Avenida Estado da Guanabara.

Many schools teaching at Macumba offer a transfer from Zona Sul — worth asking when you book, since public transport out there is slow.

Quick tips

Frequently asked questions

Is Macumba good for a first surf lesson?

It is probably the best in Rio for that. The right off the corner is long and slow, which gives you time to get to your feet — much easier than Copacabana's fast beach break.

How do I get to Macumba without a car?

Public transport is slow. Several schools operating there offer transfers from Zona Sul; confirm when booking.
